How to prevent anxiety of a junior doctors

I had loads of fears when I was a medical student and a junior doctor. These fears and anxieties are not all bad as they indicate you take your role seriously. 

During my initial years as a doctor, I frequently felt 

– I will make a mistake leading to harm to the patient or death. 

– The sky is falling on my head and I am not in control of what I am doing and what’s happening around me. 

– I wish the ground can just open up and swallow me as I can’t take this anymore. 

– I don’t know what am I doing and don’t understand how people around me understand things I can’t. 

– Constant fear and failure, fear of criticism, and fear of underperforming.   

– Feeling that I am not good enough and will never be as good as my peers and my seniors.  

All these feelings will get better with training and experience. A certain level of anxiety is good as it keeps you on your toes and helps to improve your focus. but anxiety can get out of control leading to stress, depression, lack of concentration, and mistakes. 

Remember, anxiety and stress are normal human reactions and we have all been there, no human beings are immune from them, just some are better at hiding them, most don’t want to talk openly about them as they feel people will see them as weak.  

What can I do to overcome these fears and anxieties?

Everyone’s way of dealing with anxiety and stress is different. 

– There is evidence that activities like breathing exercises, relaxations techniques, mindfulness, and physical exercise help. 

– Talking to your colleagues and seniors who are open and honest and listen to you in non judgmental way to provide you psychological support. Developing a support circle. 

– Engaging in social activities which take your mind of the work environment, where you get the opportunity to laugh and smile will also improve your confidence. 

Above all: Tell yourself that you became a doctor not by accident but because you deserve to be one. Also that the senior doctors you see today were just like you only a few years ago and you will get to their stage soon. 

What can institutions do about this? 

There has to be a recognition of this phenomenon at the institution level and a lot could be done in a systematic way to support juniors like setting up peer support groups and individual and targeted support for individual doctors.
